NC RN Refresher Program Fact Sheet

The NC RN Refresher Program is designed for:

• Any nurse desiring a basic medical-surgical nursing review
• Any nurse seeking to change practice areas
• Nurses with lapsed or inactive licenses for 5 years or more
• Nurses who have not worked in 5 or more years
  
  Self-Study Correspondence Course (Didactic Portion)
  
  
• Enroll at any time of the year
• Enrollment begins the day your application is processed and ends 9 months later
• Enrollment may be extended for 3 month for a small fee
• Students must have held an RN license at some time
• Student should plan to spend a minimum of 100 hours studying course content
• Content consists of 23 modules (or lessons) - including medical-surgical topics, physical assessment, pharmacology review and medication administration
• Each module concludes with a final exam that must be sent in for grading: at least 80% on each module exam is required to pass
• There is no comprehensive final exam to sit for at the end of the course
• Cost is $480.00
• The self-study correspondence course is approved for 14 CEUs (140 CNE Nursing Contact Hours)


Clinical Practicum with Preceptor (Clinical Portion)


• Didactic portion must be completed before clinical portion can be started
• Consists of 160 hours working directly with a clinical preceptor
• The preceptor must be present whenever the student is delivering nursing care
• A clinical checklist is used as a guide for experiences during the practicum
• Students must carry their own malpractice insurance
• Cost varies by clinical agency, and is waived if student becomes an employee
