RN Refresher Program Fact Sheet
The NC RN Refresher
Program is designed for:
- Any nurse desiring
a basic medical-surgical nursing review
- Any nurse seeking
to change practice areas
- Nurses with lapsed
or inactive licenses for 5 years or more
- Nurses who have
not worked in 5 or more years
Self-Study Correspondence Course (Didactic Portion)
- Enroll at any time
of the year
- Enrollment begins
the day your application is processed and ends 9 months later
- Enrollment may
be extended for 3 month for a small fee
- Students must have
held an RN license at some time
- Student should
plan to spend a minimum of 100 hours studying course content
- Content consists
of 23 modules (or lessons) - including medical-surgical topics, physical
assessment, pharmacology review and medication administration
- Each module concludes
with a final exam that must be sent in for grading: at least 80% on
each module exam is required to pass
- There is no comprehensive
final exam to sit for at the end of the course
- Cost is $480.00
- The self-study
correspondence course is approved for 14 CEUs (140 CNE Nursing Contact
Hours)
Clinical Practicum with Preceptor (Clinical Portion)
- Didactic portion
must be completed before clinical portion can be started
- Consists of 160
hours working directly with a clinical preceptor
- The preceptor must
be present whenever the student is delivering nursing care
- A clinical checklist
is used as a guide for experiences during the practicum
- Students must carry
their own malpractice insurance
- Cost varies by
clinical agency, and is waived if student becomes an employee
