North Carolina AHEC Program

Psychiatry

An important mission of the AHEC Program is to improve the distribution and retention of primary care physicians in the state. To this end, the nine AHECs participate in the community-based training of medical residents who have chosen to specialize in the primary care areas as defined by the NC General Assembly: family medicine, general internal medicine, internal medicine/pediatrics, general pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology.

Eastern AHEC provides support to the Department of Family Medicine at East Carolina University and to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in support of the residency programs in primary care specialties.

The North Carolina AHEC Program serves as the major resource for training primary care physicians for rural and underserved communities of the state. Over 1100 primary care physicians have been trained in AHEC residencies, with two-thirds remaining in North Carolina. AHEC support is especially important during this time of substantial reductions in federal funding to hospitals for medical education.
